I’m currently working with a film maker whose film, SALUTE, documents the ‘68 Olympics protest that you have referenced. This film is about to have wide distribution in the States. I really just want to thank you for pointing out that all three men on that dais were taking part in the protest. Obviously, for Peter Norman to have raised his fist would have been inappropriate, so he did what he could in support of his fellow athletes and in support of of civil rights. And all three ended up having to weather the backlash. In digging through so many U.S. blogs that broach the topic, you are the first out of dozens to acknowledge this. Thank you.

That photo’s from Mexico City, 1968. Forty years ago. A different world in so many ways.

Everything was getting better. Everything could get better. We were demonstrating, speaking out, and in some cases rioting, not because we liked disorder or chaos. We were acting to affect change.

Today we struggle not to lose what took so long, so much struggle, so much blood, to win.

Today we’re free to understand, but not sympathize, not agree with, Carlos and Smith’s angry message.

Forty years ago we would have appreciated it, been inspired by it, seen it as a symbol of hope.

Re the meme: Those guys got the shaft at the time. Supposedly the wrong venue for protest, but I was rooting for them and the whole idea at the time, and so were a lot of other folks I know.

Weirdly enough, the supposedly liberal press was not very liberal on that one. Great choice, Jose. Never enough reminders.

Yeah I definitely knew that, but when it comes down to it, it’s the delegates that matter, and that’s who Obama won. Secondly, only one side of the story was told because, even with there being 3 million contestants in the primary portion, there’s still a really long road ahead for Hillary if she wants to win. Regardless, I would just prefer we all get all the facts, and not just the ones convenient for the media to lead us into the ratings.

I believe Hillary won the primary, and Obama won the caucus. From what I read, there were many, many more participants in the primary–almost 3 million vs. 45,000
