Malcolm X by Favianna Rodriguez
A few notes:
- Dr. Brittney Cooper (co-founder of the Crunk Feminist Collective) calls out President Barack Obama for his misinformation on the role of Black fathers in Chicago’s massive violence. A really good read. [Ebony]
- This write up about Michael Jordan gives us a slice of MJ at 50 that few simply won’t dare write. [ESPN / OTL]
- Exactly how many ineffective teachers are there in NYC? Aaron Pallas thinks you ought to consider the source of the answer. [GothamSchools]
- Mos Def shares a sharp critique of Jay-Z and Barclays Center as a Brooklyn native. And drops a poem in here, too. [Vulture]
- Then Jon Becker said, “There is a LOT in this piece about the sports blogosphere that mirrors my view of the edublogosphere.” About Darren Rovell, Will Leitch, and the multitudes of bloggers turned sheeple … [View from the Nest]
Quote of the Week:
Actually, it’s not even a quote. Just watch.
My name is Jose Luis Vilson, teacher, writer, public speaker, activist, Syracuse University and City College grad, poet, hip-hop enthusiast, and (certainly not least) father. I've been featured at CNN, Huffington Post, Education Week, Scholastic, TEDx, and GOOD Magazine. For more,
Some know me as Jose. Others as Mr. V. Educator, writer, activist, and father. Here I'll be posting thoughts in all those voices.

THANK YOU for the link to the Ebony article! I watched the speech and heard him talk about fatherhood and immediately bristled. After seeing first-hand (through my husband) how difficult it is for a hard-working, loving, kind Black man to stay involved in his son’s life when he is not with his son’s mother, I am TIRED of hearing men blamed. Between the Prison-Industrial Complex and the way that child support laws are written so that men must pay to see their kids and just the general bias against fathers, it is disingenuous at best to claim that men somehow don’t WANT to be a part of their children’s lives.
Gretel, thank you very much. Well said.
